An excerpt from the forward of the Brian Palmer Edition of Feed Your Mind Good Stuff (an excerpt from the book, Today We Are Rich)
A good life is no accident. While a variety of factors weigh into one’s existence our days, months and years are primarily a result of the things we think, decide and act on. The information we take in has an impact on all three.
... Several years ago, noticing a pile of un-loved and un-read copies of the Chicago Tribune I called to change our subscription to only Sunday's paper. I called again when the paper continued to arrive on Thursday through Sunday not wanting the distraction, the waste of paper and the extra exercise clearing our parkway. A kindly woman explained the extra days would be “free” and that they want to keep us hooked. Exactly.
For many years my browser home page was The Wall Street Journal. It was always filled with sto- ries and information... and distraction. Whenever I had to look something up the “world” would be opened up before me and I’d stop to “see”. While often it was something interesting it usually was not important and interrupted the achievement of the task at hand. Once recognized my home page was changed to a blank page and a box for search terms. I’ve established time in the day to review the Journal and along the way become more focused and productive. Many quality news outlets are turning to a paid model. The Wall Street Journal has been and others have and will be making such a change. I’ll gladly pay a little to improve the quality of my news and reduce the clutter around it.
Back in the 80’s I discovered books on tape (now on CD as well as downloadable to a MP3 player) and have listened to more than 400 books I would not have read. While that smile you might see on my face as I drive along might be because music is playing, it’s more likely the result of a great story.
What we expect impacts what happens to us and our expectations are the result of what is in and on our minds. Don’t leave it to chance.
