Hey Tim-

Good post. I suppose Congress will next pass a resolution that no one should smile again until tough times have passed.

Our representives often lament that the government doesn't know much about running a successful business. Senator Dorgan's comments seem to verify this assertion.

Workplace psychology is part and parcel of productivity going back, at least, to the management theories of Abraham Maslow. Perhaps someone should observe to the Senator that energy follows focus, and action follows energy. Focusing on the positive (energy, emotions, etc.) in this recession is the way to build momentum and move us toward a positive outcome.

Maybe you should offer to do a complementary keynote for our elected representatives. Then they might see the value. Just a thought.

Tim,

I truly appreciate your comments. This is not the time to cut all HR development resources! Employers need to look around them, realize that the people that are still with them are their A-players...and provide the training/tools/incentives needed to deal with these times. This will result in high employee engagement. Engagement = Better Production! Production will increase, and the people that are with them now will be the beginning of a highly-engaged, productive workforce culture in their organization. A culture that is ramped up for growth when recovery begins.
