Just say NO to layoffs

Innovation is all about creative solutions to pressing problems. 

During this economic environment, we need to innovate (cut costs without killing quality) to survive. Layoffs are an easy (non-innovative) way to do that.  

But at what social, moral, financial and long-term cost?  

Cari Tuna wrote an excellent article that shows how companies have cut the overhead without cutting throats.  These companies are obeying the Law Of The Long View.

I'm not saying that layoffs are always bad. Sometimes, they are the difference between keeping the shop open and closing it because you can't pay the rent.  My point in these posts is that layoffs should be the last resort, and every time we do them we should consider it a failure to innovate or workforce plan.

Thank you for keeping up on this issue. I and many of my friends were laid off between last month and this month. These are all hardworking, talented, and experienced professionals who brought a lot to their various companies and agencies. The corporate culture does need to change on this issue. As you've mentioned in an earlier post it's a lose /lose situation - individuals, companies and the economy all suffer.
