    Talk the walk!

I was going to save this video clip (a rant on my part, shot off my deck in LA) for the book launch in September -- but I cannot contain the message! Please check out this video and pass it on. I'll likely repost it in September again.

Yo Sander. Thanks for the reminder about this. Many seemingly similar end-consumer choices have very different environmental costs, and it's important for us all to educate each other about what those costs are.

I must be in your message's target audience, however, because I confess that I don't discuss my choices as much as I could. Why? Too many times I've seen friends and colleagues express irritation at the evangelical vegan or bicycle rider. And I don't know how to talk about my own environmental choices without triggering the reflex on their part to defend their existing lifestyle. It seems that for these people (and they are many), talking might cause them to only entrench their positions.

I find that those that have influenced my attitudes the most have not been those that spoke out, but those that set quiet examples. I don't think I would be a Vegan today if it hadn't been for the one time I met a man named "X" (yes, his real name), to whom Veganism was completely unremarkable.

But, now, as an exercise... for all you readers out there: Are you Vegan? If not, how does my bringing it up make you feel? Does the idea make you uncomfortable? Do some of you feel inadequate because you're not Vegan? Did you find my claim about being Vegan in my previous paragraph irritatingly pretentious? Most importantly, is it drawing you closer to being Vegan yourself?

I'm bringing this all up because I think talking about one's choices isn't enough. It's important to consider whom your talking to, and how you frame the message. Frame it wrong, and it could do more damage than good.

So, then, *when* and *how* does one talk about one's environmental and socially responsible behaviors? Now there's a video I'd like to see.

    Hi Sander,

    Great Video!

Please keep posting such powerful and influencing messages, which keeps the day motivated.

Also, as a regular reader of your blog and considering you as my virtual mentor, would like to know about your next book which you are working on.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Anand V
